In this paper, we propose a method for automated extraction of the biliary tract from abdominal contrast CT volumes based on local intensity structure analysis. Our method utilizes a dark linear structure enhancement (DLSE) filter based on the local intensity structure analysis of the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. Our method extracts the intrahepatic bile duct (IHBD) and the extrahepatic biliary tract (EHBT) separately. Firstly, we extract the IHBD region by using the DLSE filter. The DLSE filter cannot enhance the EHBT effectively because intensity value of the soft tissue in the neighborhood of the EHBT is very similar to that of the EHBT. Therefore, we generate a modified image, that is obtained by enhancing the soft tissue and biliary wall from the CT volume. Then, we extract the EHBT using DLSE filter and a region growing method from the modified image. Finally, we obtain the region of biliary tract by combining IHBD and EHBT regions. In the experiment using 16 cases of CT volumes, a medical doctor evaluated that our approach produced good results in half of the cases. |
