An MR Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study on the Disruption of Cerebral White Matter Integrity in Alzheimer's Disease -- Fiber Tracking in the Cingulum --

(in English) Nowadays, over 10% of elderly people in Japan have symptoms with dementia, and the number of elderly people thought to be increasing in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate dementia subjectively. In this paper, we focused on Alzheimer's disease, which is one major form of dementia, and analyzed cerebral white matter integrity using nerve fiber tractography. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor images (MR-DTIs) were acquired in 19 patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease, 16 patients with moderate Alzheimer’s disease, and 19 healthy comparison subjects. We tracked fibers in the cingulum, and used the tractography to statistically compare the number of fibers and mean and standard deviation of fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, and curvature of fibers. By the tractgraphy, it was found that there were significant differences for the mean and standard deviation of fractional anisotropy between mild and moderate Alzheimer’s disease patients in the right hemisphere. In addition, there were marginally significant differences for the mean of mean-diffusivity between healthy controls and Alzheimer’s disease patients in the left hemisphere. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of subjective evaluation of Alzheimer's disease.
