Experts evaluate pearls according to their size, roundness, existence of pocks or scars, glossiness and interference color. The grade of pearl is decided by the visual inspection by the experts and novices or consumers accept it. However, it is still unknown how novices evaluate pearls. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of novices’ pearl grading and compared it with that of experts. We found that novices could evaluate pearls similarly to experts and that the grading consistency of novices were significantly higher than the chance and lower than those of experts. |
