(in English) Controlling appliances, such as television sets and airconditioning units, in foreign countries is difficult because labels on the control devices (i.e., remote controls) are written in unfamiliar languages. We present a multilanguage user interface for home appliances on NFC-enabled smartphones to address this problem. The user first taps the remote of a home appliance with the smartphone. The smartphone then reads the ID from the NFC tag embedded in the remote and displays a visual copy of the remote. The text labels on the remote are automatically translated to the language of the user by reading the default configuration of the smartphone. The user can directly control home appliances with the smartphone when a network control is enabled.
