We are currently developing an airborne ultrasound Doppler system for external urodynamics study to monitor real human urination process. Like any other medical instrument development, it is inevitable to have a phantom, or a target simulator, in advance to challenge to real patient data taking. We report here our dedicated water-jet phantom to simulate human urination for such purpose, however, we found in our trial and error process that, human urination, especially of male, can’t be simulated properly along this context, just by launching a laminar water stream from nozzle with given/desired speed and flow rate. It can properly be reproduced only by simulating exactly the twisting flow profile change at navicular fossa just behind the external orifice, to generate turbulent flow at beginning. Our water jet phantom was made up as a medium size pissing boy (manekin-piss) statue and shown in Innovation Japan 2012 together with the our wearable Doppler device, with unanimous good acceptance. |
