[Special Talk] Experimental Evaluation of Low-Loss Microstrip Bandpass Filter Using Composite Resonators

(in English) This paper presents a low-loss bandpass filter (BPF) design using composite resonators and its experimental evaluation for Microwave Student Design Competition in 2012. Using composite resonators can generate transmission zeros at stopband in addition to an equiripple passband like a conventional Chebyshev BPF. To satisfy the specifications given in the Competition, frequency responses of both a conventional Chebyshev BPF and a composite resonator BPF are analyzed by circuit simulations. As a result, design criteria of the number of resonators, unloaded quality factor, and fractional bandwidth can be found to meet a low-loss filter specification. Based on the circuital investigations, we have designed and tested the second-order BPF using composite microstrip resonators. The fabricated filter realizes a lowest-loss passband characteristic in the Competition, as well as more than 20dB attenuation at the stopband.
