Ultra wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) technology is a potential candidate in implant body area networks (BANs) where the communication is between the inside and outside of human body. UWB-IR technology can accomplish low power consumption with a simple structure and high data rate with an extremely short pulse. Moreover, it is easy to implement an energy detection scheme in UWB-IR reception because of its simple circuit structure. However, due to the high frequencies used, UWB-IR signal suffers from large attenuation in implant BAN communication, which makes it difficult to achieve a reliable communication performance. In this paper, we first discuss how to treat the wideband noise in UWB-IR receiver. Then we pay attention to energy detection duration in energy detection scheme, and clarify the optimal energy detection duration. Finally, we quantitatively evaluated the BER performance on optimal energy detection duration via a biological-equivalent liquid phantom experiment. The result suggests the feasibility of the UWB-IR technology in actual implant BAN applications. |
