Experimental implementation of a wireless sensor network which have intermittent connectivity to access points

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Detecting damaged part of old sewer pipes needs much cost because it requires much labor or expensive equipment such as self propelled vehicles with cameras. We have proposed {it A Drifting Sensor Network} for the purpose of observation of image and gas in the water way with small labor and cost. A drifting sensor network is a system to collect data observed by small and light drifting sensor nodes through access points (APs) placed along a pipe. This systems uses multiple nodes in anticipation for node failure. In addition, in order to make nodes small so that they can move smoothly in the pipes, small and low-capacity battery is used. To be ready to find and communicate with APs, communication interfaces of some nodes (representative nodes) are turned on and others are turned off so that they can save their battery power. The representative nodes are periodically changed. This paper describes the implementation of the representative node selection algorithm on Arduino/XBee based sensor nodes and experimentation of the data collection process. The experimentation results show that the system is able to collected data from the whole observation area with reduced power consumption by controlling the activation schedule of nodes.
