Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The communication capacity of satellite communications becomes very large because of the higher performance of onboard sensors. The data rate from the Earth observation satellites is increasing. The several tenths Gbps-class communications will be inevitable for data download from Earth observation satellites in the future. This cannot be achieved by RF communication but is possible using laser communications. This is the reason why laser communication is needed for satellite communications. Many space-based laser communication demonstrations have been conducted to verify sophisticated laser communication equipment in the orbit. The technology readiness level (TRL) for space-based laser communications has entered level seven and the time has come when space-based laser communications can be used in an operational environment. However, the influences due to weather conditions on the Earth could be an issue to be solved. One solution is to use the site diversity using several optical ground stations. In National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), the terrestrial free-space laser communications facilities are now under development for future airborne- and satellite-based laser communication projects. New optical ground stations and environment monitoring stations around Japan will be developed. This paper describes the concept of terrestrial free-space laser communications network facilities and monitoring stations around Japan for free-space laser communications in NICT.
