A study on departure queue reduction based on predicted runway usage

(in English) In response to increasing air traffic levels, it has become necessary to take steps to improve the efficiency of airport surface operations. The Electronic Navigation Research Institute is investigating ways to reduce congestion of departing flights that occurs during peak times, such as queuing at runways, at Haneda airport, In this paper, we first report the results of an analysis of runway usage at Haneda airport which has the greatest number of daily movements in Japan, based on surface surveillance track data. We then propose a method to reduce queuing for departure at runways by adjusting gate departure times based on predicted take off times and predicted runway usage, and validate it using a surface traffic simulator developed by ENRI. As a result, we demonstrate that our method successfully reduces the number of aircraft queuing for takeoff and queuing time.
