[Invited Talk] Research and Development on Disaster-resistant Storage System

(in English) We are engaged in a national project "Research and Development on Highly-functional and Highly-available Information Storage Technology" commissioned by MEXT from FY2012 to FY2017. One of our goals in this project is to realize a system which can avoid data loss and continue to access the data even under a wide-spread disaster like the Great East Japan Earthquake which damages wide area. The wide-spread disaster sometimes damages network connections to wide-area network like internet in addition to storage systems placed in damaged sites. Under such serious disaster, it is difficult to continue information services by adopting existing technologies. Data replication to remote site like cloud technologies can protect data itself, but information service to damaged sites isolated from internet is difficult. Data replication to nearby site has high possibilities of data loss under the disaster. To overcome this issue, we propose risk-aware replication feature which selects replication target from nearby sites with consideration of data loss risk. In this talk, we introduce mathematical model for selection of replication target and decision algorithm by using Integer programming. Moreover, we introduce planning of proof-of-concept to demonstrate improvement of availability with storage system adopting the proposed feature.
