Yes/No Communication Method for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Patients Using Their Biosignals

(in English) An ‘yes/no’ communication method is studied for ALS patients who are unable to move their bodies. The method uses cerebral blood volume changes measured with near-infrared light. While ‘Yes/No’ answers have been so far judged by a discriminant analysis based on the amplitude and phase of the blood volume change, we propose in this report new variables, which are the vibration number of blood volume change and that of heart rate. Under these variables, the task “12- second- activation and 12- second -rest of the brain“ and the task “’4- second- activation and 4- second- rest’ is repeated 3 times” are found best to separate ‘yes/no’ answers among other combinations of the tasks. Statistically this separation is proved significant with 5% level.
