Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission, which uses multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver, can increase the maximum throughput by using the spatial multiplexing or can improve the received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) by using the spatial diversity. In a cellular network, although the use of spatial multiplexing can increase the throughput for a user near the cell center, the throughput degrades for a user near the cell edge due not only to the path loss but also to strong co-channel interference (CCI) from neighboring cells. For a user near the cell edge, it is important to improve the received SNR so as not to degrade the throughput. Recently, we proposed single-carrier (SC) MIMO transmission using adaptive spatial multiplexing order selection to obtain the maximum throughput achievable with the present propagation environment. The spatial multiplexing order selection is based on the channel state information (CSI) and the (interference+noise) power obtained by the cyclic delay pilot channel estimation (CDP-CE). In our previous study, the spatial multiplexing order was adaptively selected while the modulation level was fixed. In this paper, we adaptively select both the modulation level and the spatial multiplexing order. The spatial multiplexing order and the modulation level which maximize the throughput are selected based on the CSI and (interference+noise) power estimated by CDP-CE. The outage throughput, achievable with the SC-MIMO transmission using adaptive selection of modulation level and spatial multiplexing order, is evaluated by computer simulation. It is shown that the throughput can be further increased by adaptively selecting both the spatial multiplexing order and the modulation level. |
