Over 20-dB optical isolation with 8-nm bandwidth in silicon waveguide optical isolator

(in English) An optical isolator is realized by employing magneto-optical phase shifters in a silicon waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The first order magneto-optical effect provides phase differences of -π/2 and π/2 between two interferometer arms in the forward and backward propagation directions, respectively. This results in constructive and destructive interferences in the forward and backward propagation, respectively, by including direction-independent phase difference of π/2. An optical isolation of 30 dB has been achieved in a silicon waveguide optical isolator with an insertion loss of 14 dB in a 1550 nm wavelength range. In this report, an isolation > 20 dB is obtained in a wavelength range of 8 nm, which is the largest among ever reported silicon waveguide isolators. The magneto-optical phase shifter is realized by directly bonding a 1.5×1.5 mm2 magneto-optical garnet Ce:YIG die to silicon wire waveguides.
