Optical Packet Switching by All-Optical Header Recognition Using Polarization Bistable VCSEL

(in English) We investigated an optical packet switching system based on the all optical header processing using a 1.55-μm polarization bistable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). In order to recognize the state of a header bit in the optical packet, the set optical pulse was adjusted at the recognizing bit and input into the VCSEL. The VCSEL operated as an all-optical AND-gate and a holding element. When the header bit was ‘1’, the lasing polarization of the VCSEL was switched and the polarization state was held until resetting. The VCSEL output light through the polarizer was input into the control port of the optical switch. Then the payload of the optical packet was sent to the designated port of the switch. In this experiment, we demonstrated that the 40-Gb/s NRZ payloads were sent to designated ports depending on the state of one bit in the 4-bit header with a 500-Mb/s RZ format.
