Two alternate equations of energy efficiency of a thermoacoustic prime mover are discussed. The first one is the rigorous physical one which is the change in the work flow across a stack divided by the heat flux at the higher temperature side of a stack. The other one is useful from the viewpoint of engineering and is calculated by the mean temperature and temperature gradient in a stack. Numerical simulations of a thermoacoustic prime mover have been performed by the transfer matrix method of Ueda and the two equations of efficiency have been compared. It is shown that the latter equation is inadequate. The efficiency at 20 kHz is also discussed. |
