[Invited Lecture] Multi-band Frequency Cooperative Wireless Systems for Ultra-high Capacity Wireless Networks

(in English) The number of wireless users such as cellular phone and wireless LAN is continuing to increase all over the world including Japan. Furthermore, the advent of smart phone and tablet terminal causes rapid growth of mobile traffic at the increasing rate of 1.5 to 2 times per year. This fact forces us to develop advanced technologies for ultra-high capacity wireless networks to carry 100-1000 times higher traffic in 10 years. To achieve this goal, it is very important not only to improve the spectrum efficiency but also to utilize higher frequency bands which have not been used for mobile communications so far. However, large propagation loss is encountered due to shadowing in higher frequency bands. A promising solution for this problem is “multi-band frequency cooperative wireless system” to supplement each other to cover disadvantages of each frequency band. This report describes the concept of “multi-band frequency cooperative wireless system” and technical issues to realize it. Furthermore, it describes the preliminary results on a service area detection method for the multi-band frequency cooperative wireless LAN using 60GHz band and 2.4/5GHz band.
