Theoretical Analysis on Multipacket-Per-Slot Reservation-Based Random Access Protocol Employing Multiuser Detection and ARQ

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper theoretically analyzes throughput and delay characteristics of a multipacket-per-slot reservation-based random access protocol with multiuser detection (MD) and automatic repeat request (ARQ). The system configures a series of variable-length temporal frames, at the top of which beacon from a base station starts. At the first part of the frame after the beacon stops, user terminals transmit the access requests that consist of only orthogonal preamble sequence and terminal ID in minislots. Next, the base station assigns data slots to multiple user terminals whose access requests are successfully detected by MD. The assigned user terminals transmit data packets in the assigned long slot in the latter part of frame. The assignment is on a multipacket-per-slot basis. If MD fails the data detection, ARQ starts. Previous work by computer simulation, assuming the Poisson process for packet generation, has shown that the throughput characteristics provide two peaks versus traffic load, which is very different from the conventional single user detection packet access. This paper theoretically derives that characteristic by applying the theory of general reservation-based random access protocol assuming multiuser detection and variable-length frame consisting of fixed-length slots. The theory utilizes multiuser detection probabilities numerically provided by computer simulation. The analytical results agree well with those of the computer simulation.
