Transparent Data Access and Dynamic Resource Sharing in Cloud Environments

(in English) In cloud environments, many virtual machines (VMs) usually run on a single VM host.
In terms of energy efficiency, tiny VM configuration is preferred and more VMs should run on a single VM host,
however, heavy load applications take long time to execute on such tiny VMs.
Although GPUs and many-core processors allow us to execute such applications on VMs,
existing methods restrict computational performance and VM live migration.
We introduce a computing host which executes high load applications in substitution for VMs into a cloud environment.
The computing host is shared by multiple VMs
and each VM runs an agent which grant access to the data required by the applications to the computing host.
We show the proposed method enables VMs to offload their tasks to an external accelerator with little overhead.
We also confirm that offloaded computation continues safely even when live migration of VMs is occurred.
