In this paper, we describe a novel method for bottleneck bandwidth estimation by passive network measurement.
Quick detection of bandwidth bottlenecks is important issue not only for network carriers but also for service providers
since the degradation of users's quality of experience (QoE) caused by bandwidth bottlenecks leads to serious user churn.
There are mainly two ways to measure network bandwidth;
active and passive network measurements.
The passive network measurement suit constant monitor the bandwidth of end-to-end connections
since it gives no additional load on monitored networks.
However, existing methods of bandwidth estimation by passive network measurement
tend to result in low accuracy of estimation due to negative influences of interactive communications or unstable communications.
Our developed bottleneck bandwidth estimation method by passive network measurement achieves high accuracy
by distinguishing packet intervals caused by the TCP flow control on a sender host,
and by eliminating them from the calculation of estimated bandwidth.
We validate our method through the evaluation with real network packets captured from an in-house backbone network.
The results show the method correctly eliminates the negative influence
of interactive communications and unstable communications,
and estimates the bottleneck bandwidth with a high degree of accuracy. |
