New satellite missions in earth gravity determination and modern techniques in geoid modelling have produced global geopotential/geoid models (GGM) that are considered state of the art. Preliminary validation of GGMs that are classified as combined type models: EGM 2008 and EIGEN-6C2 was carried out to determine if local geoid model (LGM) development is still warranted. The accuracies of the combined type GGMs after comparing with the GNSS-leveling derived geoid heights were 13.8 cm for EGM 2008 and 12.5 cm for EIGEN-6C2. The challenge of this study is to develop a LGM that will surpass the accuracies of the combined GGMs. The LGM developed using LSMSA has RMS of 11 cm. With GNSS observation and leveling errors considered the RMS of the LGM is around 7 cm to 8 cm. |
