It would be effective to use a sharp directional beam for clearly recording distant speech. The lower bound frequency of such a directional beam depends on the aperture length of a microphone array. Speech captured with a short aperture array, therefore, would be degraded in low frequencies. In this report, the VB (Virtual Bass) method is applied to speech received with a short aperture microphone array. This method is a bass-augmentation processing based on the psychoacoustic phenomenon “missing fundamental.” We conducted a CMOS (Comparison Mean Opinion Score) experiment to evaluate VB-processed speech, varying the lower bound frequency of a directional beam (the aperture length of a microphone array). The experimental result shows that the quality of VB-processed speech, when captured through a beam of which lower bound frequency was up to 0.6 kHz, is almost the same as that of (non-processed) speech captured through a beam of 0.3-kHz lower bound frequency. |
