Non-platinum oxygen reduction catalysts made from iron cobalt complexes with pyridyl ligands as precursors supported on multi-wall carbon nanotubes were synthesized by heat treatment with ammonia atmospheres. The mechanism of oxygen reduction for the catalysts was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and a rotating ring disk electrode method. The correlation coefficients between effective nitrogen chemical species on the surface of the oxygen reduction catalysts and cathodic current derived from oxygen reduction reaction or 4-electron reduction efficiency were estimated at each potential. It is clarified that the effective nitrogen chemical species depend on the kinds of ligands used in the precursors. The quaternary-type nitrogen species was effective when using 1, 10-phenanthroline as ligands, whereas the pyridine-type nitrogen species was effective when using 2,2’-bipyridine as ligands. |
