Terahertz (THz) wave generation from various Gallium Phosphide (GaP) waveguides has been reported. The present THz generation was based on collinear phase matched difference frequency generation method (DFG) via waveguide effects. Collinear phase matched DFG is attractive in view of compact and highly efficient THz generator. We fabricated dielectric polymer/GaP waveguide structures and THz generation characteristics were shown. THz generation features of this waveguide structure is superior to that of the conventional Air (as a clad)/GaP (as a core) structure. In conventional Air/GaP structure, THz wave extraction from inside the GaP is not efficient due to the internal total reflection in addition with the high propagation loss and large beam divergence angle. In order to overcome these problems, refractive index difference between core and cladding layer should be reduced, then refractive index will change gradually from GaP crystal to air. This waveguide structure was realized by the addition of cladding layer on GaP. Cladding layer is made of UV sensitive polymer for the fabrication of patterned waveguide structures. This has advantage on appropriate refractive index (1.15~1.20) and high transparency (70%~90%) in THz region. |
