In microwave filter design, transmission zeros (TZs) generated by cross couplings and/or a direct source/load (S/L) coupling at stopbands are indispensable for a sharp passband response. According to a synthesis theory of transversal array filters, however, the maximum number N of TZs that can be provided at stopbands has a theoretical limitation because it is determined by the number of resonators. To produce (N+1) TZs for both a sharper passband skirt and larger stopband attenuations without increasing the number of resonators, this paper introduces a frequency-dependent direct S/L coupling to design of a multi-mode filter. To realize such a novel idea, a coupling mechanism of the frequency-dependent direct S/L coupling in a dual-mode loop resonator filter is made clear by a circuit simulation. Moreover, it is numerically shown that the frequency-dependent direct S/L coupling can be easily controlled without any additional structural parameters. As an example, we design a dual-mode loop resonator filter with three TZs at an upper stopband, which validates the proposed technique of the TZ generation. |
