Global and local mechanisms of processing of 2-D mental rotation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) There are two competing views about how mental rotation of objects is performed. One argues for a global, holistic strategy in which the whole object is rotated. The other argues for a local, piecemeal strategy in which individual local features are rotated. In order to address this issue, we investigated the effects of global and local stimulus properties on mental rotation performance. Specifically, we manipulated the ambiguity of an object-intrinsic axis of stimuli and the number of their convex parts. We found that the more ambiguous the object-intrinsic axis and the larger the number of convex parts, the longer the reaction times to discriminate between an object and its mirrored counterpart. Furthermore, these global and local properties independently affected the performance of mental rotation. We propose that this result can be explained by a coarse to fine strategy to compute the amount of mental rotation.
