Spatiotemporal modulation of EEG rhythm activities during graphical and phonemic memory scans based on Sternberg memory task

(in English) Two memory scanning conditions (phonemical/graphical) were set for the modified Sternberg task using Hiragana and Katakana characters. Theta and alpha ERDs/ERSs were analyzed in order to examine the difference between the two identification modes. Theta activity increased over the prefrontal area in both conditions during the early retrieval phase. Alpha suppression time increased with memory load in the graphical condition, but not in the phonemical. In the graphical condition, significant positive correlation between reaction time and alpha suppression time was observed. These results suggested that the difference between phonemical and graphical identifications during the task was reflected on the EEG alpha band activity.
