Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation system for unknown incoming waves usually use one receiver for each element of the receiving array antenna. For that reason, the number of the receiver (namely device cost) increase simultaneously when the number of the element antenna increase to improve estimation performance. To overcome this problem, we propose DOA estimation technique utilizing Time-Division element antenna switching to reduce only the number of the receiver without decreasing the number of the element antenna, i.e. maintaining estimation performance. This technique requires the RF-switch device to select element antennas used for each observation and connect them with the same numbers of receivers, generally two pieces in each observation. Based on covariance matrix composited from each observation, DOA estimation for plural unknown incoming waves is accomplished with super-resolution algorithm. The effectiveness of this technique was confirmed by computational simulation and experimental evaluation. |
