A Second Trip Echo Suppression Method Using Two Kinds of Code Sequence for Radars

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In pulse radars, if there is strong scatterer beyond the unambiguous range of the radars, there are cases when a second-trip echo contaminates desired signals. To suppress the second-trip echo, phase coding of the transmitted signal is commonly employed. Conventionally we use an approach that is to let the second-trip echo become white noise in a frequency domain by using random phase coding for each pulse. This approach is commonly used to suppress second-trip echo. However, the problem with this method has is the estimated precision of first-trip echo deteriorates when the second-trip echo is strong. In this paper, we propose a new second-trip echo suppression method. In the proposed method, second-trip echo is subtracted from received signal using two kinds of code sequences. As a result, first-trip echo can be estimated with high accuracy without depending on the power ratio. We have confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method through simulations. For example, while the standard error of estimated velocity of the first-trip echo using the previous method exceeds 10 m/s, in the proposed method it is only 0.02 m/s.
