Growing demand on broadband ubiquitous wireless communication services assuring the resilience and robustness against the disasters necessitates the development of a new access network system that combines the advantages of both radio-wave-wireless and optical transmission techniques. In particular, in order to fuse the optical fiber communication with the radio-wireless communication without lowering the throughput of the ultrahigh capacity and ultrahigh-speed, increasing the carrier frequency of the radio-wireless communication to millimeter and submillimeter (terahertz) wave is a simple and straightforward, but challenging method. In this paper, the future outlook and the possibility of an optoelectronic device technology that is key in order to realize future optical-wireless fusion network systems will be discussed. |
