Wireless Relay Technologies for Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting -- Compensation Technologies for Broadcasting Wave Relay --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Japanese Broadcasters have constructed a great number of relay stations to deliver digital terrestrial broadcasting signals throughout Japan. A major issue in constructing these relay stations was devising a means of delivering broadcast signals from broadcasting stations in prefectural capitals to relay stations in cities, towns, and villages. One method called Studio to Transmitter Link/Transmitter to Transmitter Link (STL/TTL) uses dedicated circuits for this purpose and another called “broadcast wave relay” receives and retransmits broadcast wave using a relay format. Advantages of the broadcast wave relay method include no need for new frequency resources and the use of inexpensive facilities, but since the method uses broadcast wave from a parent or upper-level station, various types of interference on the propagation path can degrade the quality of the broadcast wave. This paper introduces the results of research and development at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) on various types of compensators for removing interference in the broadcast wave relay method.
