(in English) Recently, internet traffic is increasing and a high performance optical switch is required for optical network nodes. We have proposed optical switches using phase change material. Since the refractive indices of the amorphous and the crystalline states differ greatly, the size of the switch can be very small. And it has self-holding characteristics; therefore, the power consumption is small. In this research, we report fabrication of optical switches using phase change material with Si wire waveguide and the switching operation demonstrated by laser pulse irradiation.
