A method to extract fat drops from liver biopsy image using machine learning algorithm

(in English) In the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in HE-stained liver pathological specimens, morphological features including cell nuclei and cellular arrangement are utilized. When quantifying these morphological features, existence of fat droplets becomes a problem. The regions in which fat droplets exist are whited out in the images, making it difficult to calculate the nuclear-cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio and structural information. In the present study, for the purpose of automatically detecting and excluding regions including many fat droplets, we have developed a method of extraction of fat droplets using the feature values of color information and arrangement of cell nuclei as well as shape information. We will report a method which accurately detects fat droplets using the proposed method and quantify the fat droplet ratio against the image.
