Development of 3D analysis system for bone mineral density and bone collagen using CT.

(in English) The number of patients with osteoporosis is increasing every year in elderly women. In order to prevent the osteoporosis, it is necessary to do early detection and treatment. The bone-mineral-density (BMD) and bone collagen are two important factors related to the fractures and osteoporosis. The development of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that can support the osteoporosis diagnosis is now required. We develop automatic each vertebral body extraction and analysis algorithm, and the analysis algorithm of the vertebral body do BMD bone collagen measurement for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. This study proposes a method that can offer the point of low BMD in each of vertebral body automatically on CT images. This method extracts the regions of each vertebral body firstly. Finally, cortical bone and cancellous bone of each vertebral body region are extracted and used for measuring the BMD and bone collagen. This system was applied 2 CT cases. These result showed a good performance of our purposed method and possibility for supporting the CAD of osteoporosis diagnosis.
