Frequency dependence of the ultrasonic destruction of microorganisms in water

(in English) It is well known that a ultrasonic wave is used for the destruction of the microorganisms, however there are unanswered questions about the mechanism of cell disruption. In this study, the destructive efficiency was investigated with the suspensions of Chaetoceros calcitrans, Chaetoceros gracilis and Nannochloropsis sp. by irradiating the ultrasonic waves at 20 kHz, 400 kHz, 1.0 MHz, 2.2 MHz, 3.3 MHz and 4.3 MHz. The results showed that the reduction in microorganisms numbers depended on the ultrasonic frequency. The frequencies that showed the highest efficiency by sonication of Chaetoceros calcitrans, Chaetoceros gracilis and Nannochloropsis sp. were 3.3 MHz, 2.2 MHz and 4.3 MHz, respectively. The frequency dependence of microorganism disruption is caused by the physical interaction of both the microorganisms cell and cavitation bubble.
