Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The polyethylene glycol (PEG) of the average molecular weight 6000 in aqueous media was degraded using the ultrasonic waves of frequency 20 kHz, 400 kHz, and 1 MHz. Sonicated PEG solutions were investigated by means of matrix-assistedlaser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry(MALDI-TOFMS). The degradation effects at 400 kHz and 1 MHz were much higher than that at 20 kHz that generally used for ultrasonic cleaner or the chemical industry. Sonoluminescence spectrum from PEG solution during the sonication was measured in the range of 240-370 nm. As compared with sonoluminescence spectrum of distilled water saturated with Ar, broadband luminescence spectrum from PEG solution was very strong. However, the spectral peaks from OH radical emission of 290 nm, 310 nm and 340 nm disappeared almost completely. We found that higher-frequency sonication is more effective for the degradation of PEG than horn-type sonication at tens of kHz. This ultrasonic degradation process of PEG was suggested to becaused by OH radicals.
