A Case for Low-Power Networks using FSO and On/Off Links

(in English) Power consumption of interconnection networks incrases as the scale of supercomputers and high-end datacenters increases. To reduce network power consumption, on/off link control schemes that stop unnecessary or low-load have links have been proposed. Since conventional on/off link schemes introduce performance degradation due to inactive links, in this paper, we propose to use Free Space Optics (FSO) that can dynamically establish shortcut links between any pair of links so as to compensate for the performance degradation due to inactive links and further increase the
performance. Evaluation results show that the proposed on/off scheme that selects FSO-based shortcut links and inactive link based on application
traffic patterns improves the communication latency by 5.9% and reduce network power consumption by 40%.
