Development of a Learning and Recognition SoC Based on the k Nearest-Neighbor Algorithm with High-Speed, Low-Power and Error-Free Operation

(in English) In this study, we propose the hardware implementation of the k-nearest neighbor method on an SoC with learning and recognition capability. Using the results of the clock-counting type word-parallel Euclidean-distance search associative memory, an integrated digital implementation of the k-nearest neighbor algorithm with high-speed, low-power processing was realized which was not possible previously. By saving the class information of all reference data in an SRAM, flexible search becomes possible for a variety of situations with no restriction of the number of classes for the reference data. The chip design, using 180nm CMOS technology, extended the word-parallel high-speed nearest neighbor search of the associative memory to the more versatile k-nearest neighbor recognition algorithm. In comparison to the 25mm2 area of the entire SoC, the extension circuit to the k-nearest neighbor algorithm was realized with a small area consumption of only 0.445mm2.
