Implementation and Evaluation of Multi-stream Bandwidth Compressor

(in English) Bandwidth enhancement with lossless data compression is one of the key solutions to improve performance of custom stream computing with FPGAs. Actual computing kernels require multiple streams, which should be compressed and encoded into a single channel to be written to external memories. Although the computing kernel requires synchronized data elements from multiple streams, difference in compression ratio makes streams have various speeds to feed their original data. Therefore we need a mechanism to synchronize multiple compressed streams. This paper presents a synchronized encoding method for compressed streams, and its hardware design. We also evaluate the hardware with the area and the maximum frequency in preparation for practical usage.
