Why Japanese mothers use IDS and ADS words in their speech to toddlers? -- Relationships with socialization goals --

(in English) This study investigated the relationships between maternal socialization goals and maternal speech styles in using IDS and ADS words. Thirty Japanese mothers spoke to their 20-months-old children while viewing pictures of 21 familiar objects on a monitor. The mothers also responded to questionairs regarding socialization goals for their children at age five. Results showed that interdependence-orientation and high-motivation-oriented goals concerning socialization were positively related to multiply using both of IDS and ADS words and negatively related to using only IDS words.
