Japanese infants' use of grammatical particles in segmenting and syntactically categorizing words

(in English) Using a violation-of-expectation procedure, we investigated from when Japanese-learning infants use function words, i.e., a noun particle ‘ga’, in segmenting an adjacent word from fluent speech and in syntactically categorizing the segmented word into a “noun” class. Experiment 1 tested 10-, 12-, and 15-month-olds and found that by 15 months of age Japanese-learning infants use the particle to segment an adjacent word. The results of Experiment 2 suggested that 15-month-olds syntactically categorize “nouns” by attending to noun particles whereas they fail to use verb inflectional suffixes to syntactically categorize “verbs”. The reason for why Japanese infants become able to syntactically categorize “nouns” earlier than “verbs” was discussed by comparing the frequency and variability of noun-particle combinations with those of verb-suffix combinations in the input.
