The purpose of this study was to examine the situation of intergenerational communication in which young generations feel grateful to the knowledge, wisdom and advice of old adults with regulatory focus theory. We hypothesized that when the advice fit recipients’ self-regulatory orientation (regulatory fit), the recipients would feel more grateful to the persons despite their generation. Participants were 37 young Male adults (M=19.97, SD=1.46). They were assigned to the old condition or the same generation condition. In the old condition, the adviser was an old adult, whereas in the same generation condition, the adviser was a young person. In the both conditions, the participants listened to the adviser who read the scenario of regulatory fit (regulatory fit condition) or non-fit (regulatory non-fit condition). Results showed that the recipients felt grateful to the old adviser even in the regulatory non-fit condition in contrast to the young adviser condition. The present study revealed that the results different from the previous studies of regulatory focus theory were shown in the situation of intergenerational communication. |
