This paper proposes an integer tone mapping operation (TMO) with fixed-point arithmetic
for high dynamic range (HDR) images expressed in floating-point data.
A TMO generates a low dynamic range (LDR) image from HDR image by compressing its dynamic range.
In general, it uses floating-point arithmetic because values of HDR images are expressed in floating-point data.
For this, it requires huge computational costs, even though LDR images are expressed in integer data.
The method with fixed-point arithmetic
and integer processing in which a floating-point number is divided into the exponent and the mantissa
was proposed.
However, in the previous research, HDR image formats are restricted,
so it is difficult to apply integer processing to HDR images having various formats.
By using an intermediate format, the proposed TMO is available for any HDR images.
The results show reducing the computational cost while maintaining the numerical accuracy. |
