An Evaluation of Bandwidth Fairness Control among Subscribers for Cascaded Switches in Optical Access Network

(in English) In the optical access network such as FTTH, network configuration of cascading Ethernet switches is sometimes used to accommodate subscribers efficiently. However, bandwidth unfairness caused by the difference in the number of hops and the number of subscribers connected to each switch is a technical problem in this configuration. Therefore, we have proposed a method to control bandwidth fairness which is based on the proportion of the number of accommodated subscribers so that we can realize QoS control economically in the network configuration of cascading Ethernet switches. In this paper, we have implemented three types of egress QoS functions in the network simulator to compare fairness among subscribers. The three types are FIFO method which doesn't control QoS, dedicated queue method which has per subscriber queues and can control QoS strictly, and proposed method which has shared queues and can control QoS in a cost-effective structure. From simulation results, we have compared fairness indices of those methods that indicate bandwidth fairness among subscribers. Consequently, we confirmed that the fairness index of proposed method is 0.85. This value is inferior to the fairness index of dedicated queue method’s being 0.99, but it is improved compared to FIFO method’s being 0.54.
