A passive optical network (PON), which is an optical access infrastructure providing cost-efficient broadband services, has been deployed in recent years. On the other hand, the increase in optical network unit (ONU) power consumption is a serious problem. Although the power-saving function of the ONU, e.g. a cyclic sleep technique, was proposed, it caused a larger queuing delay in the sleep mode. This paper proposes a threshold design method of the frame inter-arrival time (FIAT) to maintain the downstream average queuing delay at a constant level in a specified range of downstream traffic rate. In the proposed method, the threshold is dynamically determined on the basis of the queue length information in the optical line terminal (OLT) downstream buffer. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by the simulation results. |
