Modulation of Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) and brain activation level related to the task difficulty
Yusuke Yokota, Yasushi Naruse (NICT) NC2013-122
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is oscillatory brain activity induced by repetitive auditory stimuli. Previous studies reported that the power and inter-trial phase coherence of ASSR could be modulated by various types of experimental tasks. However, those studies used different physical stimuli for different difficulty tasks, and the effect of the internal brain activation level itself has not been clarified enough. In this study, we employed an N-back task which is a working memory task, and can regulate the degree of difficulty with an identical physical stimulus. We recorded the magnetoencephalogram with auditory stimuli and N-back tasks, resulting ASSR reduction pertaining to increase in the task difficulty.
The result suggests that ASSR reflects the internal brain activation level and could be a good indicator for it.
