The recent increase of surveillance cameras installed in public spaces is evoking a strong demand for face recognition systems which tolerates partially occluded or non-frontal faces. With this trend as a background, we are developing a novel face recognition system by utilizing an auto-associative memory. To improve the performance of the auto-associative memory based on a three-layer perceptron, we introduced a functionality of lateral inhibition to our framework in updating the weights from the hidden layer to the output layer in the learning process. The simulation results showed the effectiveness of introducing the lateral inhibition although we failed to obtain the overall improvement for each subject included in the benchmark face database we used. |
