Previous clinical studies on the microstimulation to the primary visual cortex (V1) in blind human patients have found that the intensity and temporal flickering of the perceived phosphenes are modulated by the frequency of the repetitive current-pulse stimulation and the intermittent duration between the stimuli. Such a temporal property of the stimulus-induced phosphene is thought to depend on properties of V1 responses to the stimuli, and of signaling from V1 to higher areas including the secondary visual cortex (V2). However, it would be unfeasible to examine the relationships between the stimulus parameters and the neural responses in visual cortical areas in human clinical tests. In this study, we investigated the cortical responses to train stimulation of current single pulses, or of pulse bursts, in mice in vivo, where the large-field optical imaging of neural activities in V1 and V2 was able to be made. Our experimental results suggested that properties of the responses in V1 and V2-LM area, as well as of the signaling from V1 to V2-LM area depends on the stimulation mode and the inter-pulse/burst interval. |
