Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The optokinetic response (OKR) of the eye is induced to follow a large field visual motion. The gain of the OKR (eye velocity / visual motion velocity) is about 0.6 at 1/8Hz in naïve goldfish. If the same periodic visual stimulus is given continuously, the OKR gain increases up to 1.0. In addition to gain increase, goldfish acquires predictive OKR that is named period tuning (PT). Namely after continuous exposure to a periodic visual motion, goldfish OKR velocity decreases as if it predicts the timing of the change in visual motion direction. In the present study, we evaluated two kinds of characteristics of PT in goldfish: 1) stimulus direction selectivity, and 2) stimulus stop timing dependency. We show that the PT occurs only in the visual motion direction to which visual stimulus was given. Furthermore, the different PT can be induced for the different stimulus directions. These results indicate that the PT is stimulus direction selective. Also, we found that goldfish OKR learns the duration of the visual motion, namely it predicts the end of the visual motion.
