Inhibition of return to auditory stimulations

(in English) In visual reaction tasks, “inhibition of return” has been observed. Inhibition of return is the effect that the reaction time of valid trials become much longer than that of invalid trials when SOA is over 300ms in peripheral cue experiments. However, for auditory reaction tasks, inhibition of return has not been reported. In athletics, inhibition of return seems to be involved when reacting quickly to the target sound after the prenotification sound. In this study, we experimented by using the difference of tone frequencies to confirm whether inhibition of return is also observed in auditory tasks. The subject for this experiment was presented successive two sounds as prenotification sounds and target sounds with variety of SOAs and combinations at random. In these cases, it is called a valid trial when the frequency of the prenofication sound matches with the target sound, and it is called an invalid trial when they differ. As a result, the reaction time of the invalid trials shorten significantly in all SOAs, although inhibition of return could not be found. In addition, when the simple reaction task were used with two frequencies, the significant difference could not be found in the reaction time among frequencies. Compared to cue experiments, a tendency was found that the deviation in reaction time of invalid trials is smaller than that of the simple reaction tasks.
